Be Aware of How to Store Food for Emergencies

Ever imagined yourself caught in the middle of a disaster? What will you do? How will you eat?
When a certain emergency or disaster occurs, you must be aware that there is a high chance that you will not experience any relief within the first three days in the least. This only means that for a minimum of three days, you must be able to keep yourself and your whole family properly fed. Since there is a high chance that there will be no electricity, it only means that there will be no refrigeration and gas might even be insufficient, which means that the conventional cooking and cooling might not be done. Storing non perishable, high energy and no preparation needed foods is very essential for the short term aid. But if long term survival is what you are expecting for, you should know how to store food in a bigger supply.

Since emergencies cannot be avoided, there is really a big must for you to be aware of how to store food. The first thing that you can actually do is to conduct an inventory and check the food that you have in your pantry as well as the number of days when it will be able to last. Dried food and canned food will be able to last for several weeks and even for months. Fresh foods and those that you will see in your freezer and fridge will turn out bad really quick the moment the electricity goes off. Meanwhile, the dry foods can be ruined the moment that a flood hits your house and there is a big chance that all your stored food will be gone the moment that a hurricane or tornado destroys your area.

One thing that you must know about how to store food is the need to allot a certain part of your home for emergency storeroom.  Keep your food supply and water supply meant for emergency in that very area. Your basement’s corner is the perfect location for storage of these things. The spot is undisturbed, dark, cool and has the biggest chance to survive almost everything, except flood. See to it that all your food supplies are packed inside plastic tubs and these are sealed properly so that mice damage can be avoided. Put weighty items such as water below and the light weight ones should be placed on the shelves higher.  Label things with their expiration dates and list down those that will expire next for easy usage and replacement of items.

The most ideal food for disasters is one pill that has all the nutrition and calories that is equal to a single meal. But since this magic pill is not yet invented, there are some things and foods that you should keep in mind, aside from knowing how to store food. These include food bars, MREs or meals ready to eat, camping meals, comfort food and many others.
Disasters do happen, but if you know how to store food you can use during such times, you will surely be able to survive even the worst cases.
